The History of Benzoin Siam in Vietnam
Benzoin Siam (Styrax tonkinensis) is a native aromatic tree species of Vietnam, naturally found in the mountainous regions of Northern Vietnam. For centuries, it has been closely associated with local forest life and traditional resin harvesting practices. Today, Benzoin Siam is recognized globally as a premium natural raw material for perfumery, cosmetics, incense, and fragrance industries.
Early History and French Colonial Period
Benzoin Siam has been present in Vietnam for a very long time as a native forest resource. During the French colonial period, French botanists and traders discovered the aromatic value of Benzoin resin in Vietnam’s northern highlands.
Recognizing its unique sweet balsamic fragrance and excellent fixative properties, the French introduced Benzoin Siam resin to Europe, where it became an important raw material for the early perfume industry in France. From that period onward, Vietnamese benzoin was exported to be used in the production of fine fragrances and aromatic formulations.
At that time, Benzoin Siam was considered a valuable natural export ingredient, contributing to the development of traditional European perfumery hundreds of years ago.
Period of Decline and Market Disruption
After the colonial period, the benzoin industry in Vietnam experienced several ups and downs. Due to changes in global demand, industrialization, and the rise of synthetic fragrance materials, the demand for natural benzoin resin decreased significantly.
In some periods, benzoin cultivation and tapping activities nearly disappeared in certain regions, as market demand weakened and farmers shifted to other agricultural products. The traditional knowledge of benzoin tapping was at risk of being lost in many mountainous areas.

Traditional Craft Passed Through Generations
In many ethnic minority communities in Northern Vietnam, benzoin harvesting remains a traditional livelihood passed down through generations. Families have long relied on benzoin forests as a source of income, using carefully learned tapping techniques to collect resin without harming the trees.
This traditional knowledge plays a key role in maintaining both the quality and sustainability of Vietnamese Benzoin Siam production today.
